Xiangshi Ren is a lifetime tenured professor in the School of Information and founding director of the Center for Human-Engaged Computing (CHEC) at Kochi University of Technology. He is founding president and honorary lifetime president of the International Chinese Association of Computer Human Interaction (ICACHI). He has been named as one of the Asian Human-Computer Interaction Heroes in ACM CHI 2015. He was a visiting professor at the University of Toronto, visiting faculty researcher at IBM Research (Almaden), and visiting/guest/chair professor at several universities in China. Currently he is chair professor of Jilin University, adjunct professor of Beijing Normal University. He is a Senior Member of the ACM, and a Senior Member of the IEEE.

Prof. Ren has been working on fundamental studies in the field of human-computer Interaction (HCI) for over twenty-five years. He and his colleagues have established a unique research framework based on information technology, incorporating methodologies such as human performance modeling, developing new algorithms, conducting user studies, and systematically testing and applying HCI theory to applications.  Recently, he and his colleagues have established a new philosophical foundation for rethinking the relationship between humans and computers - Human-Engaged Computing (HEC) which refers to the synergism of human capacities and technological capabilities. This new concept (HEC) has already been briefed in an IEEE article (Computer, August 2016), which is highly recognized by HCI pioneers and researchers.

The Center for Human-Computer Interaction (CHEC) was established in April 2015. CHEC is an interdisciplinary research center in fundamental studies of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Human-Engaged Computing (HEC), including natural user interfaces, human performance models, assistive interfaces, haptic interfaces, mobile interfaces, digital mindfulness, well-being technologies, cognitive video games. CHEC focuses on the design, implementation and evaluation of these areas and signifi¬cant associated phenomena especially as they apply to human needs and potentials.

CHEC is positioned as a link between Asia and Western world. CHEC works in three languages (Japanese, English, Chinese), with students from a variety of countries adding more languages and much cultural diversity. Members are from Japan, China, Korea,,Thailand, India, Iran, Indonesia, Myanmar, Egypt and so on. CHEC also maintains good relationships with academic and industrial colleagues on both sides of the general E/W cultural divide. The center serves as a doorway through which businesses, researchers and institutions can channel their ideas, innovations, proposals and communications - West to East and East to West.

The director of the Center for Human-Engaged Computing (CHEC) is Xiangshi REN, who is founding president and honorary life-time president of the International Chinese Association of Computer Human Interaction (ICACHI). ACM CHI 2015 Local hero. He was a visiting professor at the University of Toronto, visiting faculty researcher at IBM Research (Almaden), and visiting/guest/chair professor at several universities in China.
